Harvard University offers the Harvard University Academy Scholarship, for which applications are currently being accepted. Each year, four to six Academy Scholars receive two-year positions at the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The Academy Scholars are a group of individuals with creativity, initiative, inquisitiveness, and originality, whose work in locations or areas outside the United States or Canada has tremendous potential for careers in large academic institutions or international organizations.

Academy Scholars are nominated for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in residence at The Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. They receive substantial financial and research support to conduct sustained research projects and/or access supplementary training in their chosen fields and areas. The Senior Scholars, a distinguished group of senior faculty members at Harvard University, serve as mentors to the Academy Scholars, assisting them in reaching their intellectual potential.

Harvard University Academy Scholarship Eligibility

To qualify for the Harvard University Academy Scholarship, candidates must meet the following criteria:

• Competent persons of all nationalities, sexes, and races are encouraged to submit their work.
• The scholarship for these scholarships is restricted to recent PhD (or equivalent professional school degree) recipients and doctoral candidates in the social sciences or law.
• Before seeking to become Academy Scholars, those still pursuing a PhD should have completed their normal training and be well into the preparation of their dissertations. The PhD completion date must be within three years of the October 1 application deadline if you hold a PhD.
• For candidates applying by the October 1, 2021 deadline, the PhD or equivalent must have been conferred after September 30, 2018.
• The Selection Committee evaluates all applicants in a single pool.

Harvard University Academy Scholarship Advantages

The following perks are provided to Harvard University Academy Scholarship recipients:

• Beneficiaries will get an annual stipend of $70,000.
• If selected before receiving the PhD, the Scholars will receive a $31,000 annual stipend until the PhD is conferred.
• This stipend is augmented by support for seminar and research travel, research assistants, and medical insurance. Some instruction is permitted but not necessary.

How to Apply for Harvard University Academy Scholarship

To apply for the Harvard University Academy Scholarship, applicants must adhere to the following instructions:

1. All application materials must be submitted by October 1st. Applications submitted after the deadline will not be accepted.
2. The whole application will contain the following:

• A cover letter that briefly describes the academic field, country or region of specialization, and proposed research topic of the candidate.
• A curriculum vitae or resume that includes a list of publications, a 2500-word research proposal that includes intellectual objectives as well as planned methodological and disciplinary work, and a list of publications.
• PhD program transcript (a copy).
• 3 recommendation letters (uploaded via the online application).

In your planned research statement, applicants may include footnotes, endnotes, and/or bibliographies, but their inclusion is not required. If references are not included, they have no bearing on the maximum word count of 2500 for the research statement.

No copies of published papers or abstracts are required as part of the application process. They are not included in your submission.

Concerning international university transcripts, the program reviewers read numerous submissions from international universities and require as much transcript-like official documentation as your university’s Registrar can provide. For all graduate work, including Master’s and PhD programs in which you have been or are enrolled, your institution likely receives these requests frequently and can provide you with the necessary documentation upon request.
